HOW TO GET A BRITISH PASSPORT URGENTLY
The application process for a British passport can take up to 10 weeks. But, what happens if you need it before then? In that case, you can pay for a faster service by booking a passport office appointment up to 3 weeks in advance. Let us walk you through the process so you can apply for an urgent passport today.
Who can apply
You can use this service if you are in the UK and you need to renew your passport urgently. If you're outside the country, you must apply for an emergency travel document instead.
How to apply
There are two ways in which you can apply for an urgent passport: using the "online premium" service or the "1 week fast track." Both ways will require you to book, pay, and attend an appointment at your nearest passport office.
The Online Premium
To apply for the Online Premium service, you will need to submit your old passport and a digital photo. The latter can be taken using a smartphone or digital camera, and should follow the regulations stated here.
You must apply and book an appointment online. If you are not able to attend your appointment, you can ask someone else to go in your place. This person will need to bring a signed and dated letter where you authorise them to collect your passport. They should also bring a valid ID, which can be a passport, a driving licence, or a utility bill not older than 3 months.
The cost for this service is £177 (or £187 for a 50 page frequent traveller passport), and it can only be used if you wish to renew an adult passport. You'll receive your passport right away.
The 1 Week Fast Track
You can use this service if:
- • You’re applying for a first child passport
- • You want to renew an adult or child passport
- • You want to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged passport
- • You want to modify your passport due to a name or gender change
To apply, you must get a paper application form from a Post Office, and book an appointment online. The day of your appointment you will need to provide 2 identical printed passport photos, your filled-in application form, and the accompanying supporting documents. If you are not able to go to your appointment, you can send someone to deliver the documentation in your place.
If you choose to apply this way, the cost for this expedite service is £142 for an adult passport (or £152 for a 50 page frequent traveller passport). If you are applying for a child, it'll be £122 (or £132 for a 50 page frequent traveller passport). You'll get your passport delivered to your home within 1 week of applying.
